Randomy Randomness! Homeschool Edition

  • We got our homeschooling materials at last! Yippeeeeeee!
  •  Ohmygoodnessnewbooksarefun!  We're a little excited, if you can't tell.  But, the majority of our materials are going to have to wait until we get back from our 2.5 months back in Java.
  • We're planning on a return to Java to complete our last two units of language school Aug. 7 or so.  We'll be there thru mid-Ocotober.
  • Brooklyn will be returning to the International school there in Salatiga for one quarter of 2nd grade and Madison may possibly get to join the Kindergarten class as well.  Paige will go back to the preschool.  It'll be good for all of the girls to have something to do while Mom and Dad are in class.
  • But seriously, with all these new materials I am feeling so inspired and ready to start homeschooling!  Maddie has been anxious to start so I'm letting her go ahead with a little beginning phonics/reading.
  • Brooklyn is joining her friend, KJ, in his homeschool and she really enjoys it!  We'll keep that up for the next few weeks at least.  It's always nice when homeschooling moms can combine efforts a little bit!
  • One of the things in our homeschool shipment was a chalkboard wall sticker - I know, that sounds very strange.  Basically, it's just a giant black sticker that you can stick on the wall and then use chalk to write on it.  It's been a TON of fun for all of us already.  I love that it can be moved around as needed and it works far better than I expected. And it wasn't a big deal to have shipped like a real chalkboard would have been!
  • For those of you who may wonder - our homeschool is pretty eclectic...a combination of all the ideas I liked best from philosophies like Classical Education, Charlotte Mason, and more.  Our main focus is reading, writing, and arithmetic but because Sean and I both really love subjects like Geography, History, and Science, those subjects are also well represented. I'm just as excited as the girls to delve into things like Astronomy and the Middle Ages. We have lots of fun books to read together as a family or for Brooklyn to read on her own as her skill improves.  I'm also really excited about our Bible time.  I chose things I know we'll ALL love and use for the next several years and stuff all three girls can do together in varying degrees as they grow.
