Quick Update

It has been a busy weekend...here's a short update on all we've been up to lately:

  • On Friday, I was finally able to catch up with a missionary friend here in Oaxaca that we went to language school with. We've had plans to get our families together for a while and it still hasn't worked out, but I was glad that Lorenda finally just drove over here (we live very close to them, actually) and stayed for a good long chat. So fun to catch up with people we thought we'd never see again! We kept in touch over the years, of course, but never imagined we'd be in Oaxaca together someday. Goes to show you that you never know what God will do.
  • Friday night we had hoped to go to a baseball game, but it became obvious that there was no way that Madison was going to stay up past her bedtime. We ended up going for a long drive all over Oaxaca, hoping she'd take a nap. She did take a nap. But it wasn't enough. So, we ended up staying home and watched some TV episodes on DVD. We've been watching the first season of Five Mile Creek. It's kinda dorky, but Sean and I are really enjoying it :-)
  • Saturday: Our drive around Oaxaca the night before had taken us by a huge and beautiful garden center/nursery. After Sean ran to the store to grab some things for later in the day, we all went together to pick out some plants for our back patio. We have a large concrete patio out back, and it has a great planter that runs along the back along the wall. We've been anxious to put some plants and flowers back there since the day we moved in. We ended up starting out with some bougainvillea and jasmine vines. It will take a while for them to grow to the sizes we're hoping for, but its a great start. We're glad to have a little color back there (there's still plenty of space for lots of other pretty plants when we get the time and money for it) and we're really hoping that the divine-smelling jasmine, will overpower the smell from the Rio Salado. (Just a few blocks from us, runs an open sewage canal. It stinks just as much as you'd expect an open sewer to smell. We've heard the smell should be getting better once the rain starts and kind of flushes things along. I don't know about that, but I do know that the breeze blowing through our window right now is a mixed blessing. Sure, it cools me down a bit...but it isn't exactly fresh-smelling.)
  • We took naps and cleaned up the house before our friend Neri and his girls came with food for the party. We offered to host a birthday party for Karina, Neri's girlfriend who is also the MAF-Mexico accountant. His house is a little too small, and the Ross' are still getting over some sickness at their house. We ended up with around 16 people in our house for the party! Other than our table, we don't have any furniture downstairs...it worked out pretty well, though. We just borrowed some card tables from the Ross' to put in our cavernous downstairs area and invited them to sit on our couch upstairs and watch the baseball game on TV while we waited for Neri's fish to cook in the oven. I didn't have to do much of anything to prepare for the party since Neri did all the cooking. I made a salad and we bought some ice cream for dessert. Neri made stuffed shark fillets, ceviche, and some breaded tilapia fillets for the kids. We're not fish-y types, but it was all very good. (Neri is easily the best cook in Mexico) It was a very fun night. We've found it very easy to befriend Mexicans here and what fun to celebrate a birthday "Mexican style"!! (No, we only drank Cokes, no Coronas :-)
  • Brooklyn had a blast with the girls that came over. 3 of them are Neri's daughters and another family that came has two girls as well. There was one solitary little boy, but he took it well! Anyway, near the end of the party, Brooklyn was really sad that they were all leaving. I was inside, so I missed all this (or it might have gone differently) but Sean tells me that Joel, the father, teasingly said to Brooklyn that she should just come to their house. This was in Spanish, but Brooklyn understood him perfectly and took him seriously! Next thing Sean knew, she was begging to go spend the night at her friend's house! And so, an impromptu slumber party was born. All the girls stuffed themselves into the car, and before I even knew what was happening, my daughter was at her first-ever sleepover. In Mexico. With people who do not speak her language. At a house I have not yet been to. Oh my! It was so hard for me not to snatch her right back out of that car and tell Sean she was too young. But I could see she was in good hands (we do at least know the parents) and that this was a great opportunity for Brooklyn to be with friends and use her Spanish. I knew she wouldn't miss me one iota. I missed her though! Sean went to get her early this morning and Brooklyn did not want to leave. She had a great time. Crazy kid.
  • After church we all came home and fell into our respective beds for some looooong naps. It felt great to catch up on some sleep. Tonight, we are going to a baseball game. Finally. Neri is going to take Sean and I. We're leaving the girls with Neri's oldest daughter, Zuri. We can't wait to go! I'm sure there will be a blog about that!
That turned into a long update, but there you have it! Maybe I'll post some pictures later.
