Back to Jungle Livin'

Check out Sean's post about our time in Quito and his other post about some touring we did while we were there. It was a great time and we were able to get some things done that can only be done in the city - like dentist appointments, shopping for groceries in a supermarket, and - the real highlight - eating at Papa John's Pizza, McDonalds, Taco Bell and TGI Fridays...

Quito is so different than where we live in Shell. So. Different. It is hard to believe they are in the same country sometimes. We hadn't been to the city for more than 5 months and, I have to admit, we were struck with a mixture of culture shock and relief when we entered the city. Quito is a beautiful city. To us it is anyway. It just seems all sparkly and clean, full of all sorts of fancy and newfangled technology...stoplights, for instance. We enjoyed cool mountain air (albeit slightly - okay, very - polluted) and real sunshine and "quiet" nights (in other words, no roosters crowing). We didn't realize how much we were missing "civilization" until we were there. It was a nice treat.

But it is still good to be home. The MAF guest apartment in Quito leaves a little to be desired when it comes to creature comforts - it is somewhat like camping at a cabin...which is weird, I suppose, in the midst of that glittering modern city. At any rate, it always feels nice to pull up to our own home after a few days away.

We have a guest staying with us. He is a 17-year-old missionary kid from Zambia, Africa. He's a great kid and we're having fun getting to know him. Someday, he hopes to be a missionary pilot himself. He's excited to see where Nate Saint once lived and flew - we're hoping to get him out on a flight to the Waorani (Auca) Zone sometime while he is here in the next 3 weeks so he can see Palm Beach and possibly meet some of the "famous" members of that spearing party so long ago. I really hope he gets a chance to get out there. Pray for that!

I've just spent the day trying to catch up on laundry and all the odds and ends that need to be done after being gone for 4 days. I feel like I'm just constantly behind these days. It wouldn't be so bad if I didn't need to sleep....
