Saturday morning

It is a lovely Saturday morning - a bit overcast, so it isn't too hot.  I love that we had a full night of rain.  These smoke-free days are a true gift after experiencing our first smoke season in Palangkaraya.  A true gift.

I am tired this morning.  I stayed up too late reading in our new hammock on the back porch.  I love cuddling up with a good book in an overstuffed chair next to the fire on a chilly day.  Since that isn't going to happen here, I've found my alternative - relaxing in the hammock on the porch while it rains outside!  It got a little chilly even. I had to go turn off the fan. 

Despite my late night, the girls (who went to bed at their normal time) were up before 6 a.m. asking for help with the DVD player and help getting their cereal.  Then, Sean got a call to go do a medevac flight for a woman having difficulty in childbirth.  So, all hope of sleeping in was forgotten and I've been puttering around the house this morning downing as much coffee as I can to keep these eyes open.

There will definitely be a nap today!  Or not.  I shouldn't get my hopes up, should I?

Sean took this picture of these adorable puppies the other day. They are somebody's pets. That's right...this is what I tell myself so I can sleep at night. The other day at language school, one of my classmates was sharing a story about seeing a dog get run over by a guy on a motorcycle. He was telling the story (in his limited Indonesian) to one of the sweetest little Indonesian gals that I've met. She's kind and thoughtful and polite and a good teacher. As the story went on, Ibu Tasya was smiling and nodding. We were all waiting for her to exclaim, "Oh, the poor puppy! Was he okay?!" But guess what she said? "Oh, I LOVE dog meat! It's my favorite. I don't like the small dogs, but the big dogs are so tasty!" We all sat there speechless, waiting for her to laugh and say, "Just kidding!" She did not. We went on with class as if she'd just proclaimed that she really enjoys eating a good salmon fillet when she can get one....

So, okay, I'm panicking

Brooklyn turned six last week. It was a happy occasion. I decorated. There were plenty of princesses and pink stuff. She got a special birthday outfit to wear. And plenty of other gifts too. Of course there was a party - well, as much party as two sets of grandparents and one set of parents plus two baby sisters can provide. Her cake was strawberry, just as she requested. This is the same cake Mom made my sister and I for years (and still does, actually). It looks terrible (always does) but, trust me, it's awesome. Actually, mine didn't taste as good as Mom's...wonder why. And did you notice those sparkly things in here ears?! Yup. Got her ears pierced for her birthday, too. She looks more and more grown up and I can't stand it. I love this little girl. I'm proud of who she is. I can't wait to see all she becomes. But I'm not handling things so well. This growing up stuff is for the birds. Today, we went and registered her for Kindergarten. Kinder...

The Great Debate...or what to do with your kid in September.

Homeschooling vs. Public School has been heavy on my mind for a few years now. As Brooklyn enters those school age years, I find myself...well, freaking out . Because Brooklyn is my oldest, she's had to be a guinea pig. She's also had to suffer through a Mom with separation anxiety and control issues. Brooklyn is the most independent and socially brave little person you ever met. I'm always trying to hold her back. It's a major cause for tension in our relationship - my need to control and her need for independence. This summer has been a rough one for me. Brooklyn will start kindergarten in the fall. I've been on a bit of a rampage about whether or not we could send her to public school. If I'm perfectly honest, I'll admit that with my rose-colored glasses on, I really, really, really, want to homeschool. I love the idea of being there when my child learns something new. I want to do all those fun projects. I want to see the light of understanding...
